.Bank Domain Delivers Unparalleled Cybersecurity For Banks

fTLD Registry Services, LLC Celebrates its 10th Year Serving the Banking Industry and Zero DNS Abuse Cases Since Inception of .Bank

WASHINGTON, DC – October 1, 2024 – fTLD Registry Services proudly marks the 10th anniversary as operator of .Bank, the only domain extension built exclusively for the banking community. Authorized by ICANN in September 2014 and launched in May 2015, .Bank has grown to support a community of more than 860 banks, achieving a significant milestone with zero DNS abuse cases since its inception.

The .Bank Top-Level Domain (TLD) was built to advance cybersecurity in banking by providing secure, exclusive digital addresses for banks. Developed by a coalition of financial services organizations in partnership with the American Bankers Association and the Bank Policy Institute, the mission of .Bank is to safeguard the online presence of banks, reinforcing trust and authenticity through rigorous domain security protocols.

“Traditional domain security measures are insufficient to protect against today’s advanced cyber threats. We set out to create the .Bank domain with the goal of making the internet a safer place for banking,” said Craig Schwartz, President of fTLD Registry Services. “With a decade of flawless operation, we are proud of the results we’ve achieved so far, as we continue to set the standard for cybersecurity in banking.”

The .Bank domain offers a comprehensive domain defense strategy, built on the foundation of stringent security requirements, including DNSSEC with robust cryptographic algorithms, the HTTPS protocol, and the enforcement of TLS 1.2 or higher on web servers. Additionally, it enforces mandatory DMARC and SPF records for email communication, coupled with a rigorous verification process exclusive to banks and their associations. These measures ensure the highest levels of domain security for banks.

“Having a verified Top-Level Domain like .Bank really locks in robust cybersecurity controls for banks from the start,” said John Carlson, Senior Vice President of Cybersecurity Regulation and Resilience at the American Bankers Association (ABA). “These domains can only be obtained by banks, so bad actors are unable to register one of these domains, making it very difficult to impersonate a legitimate bank.”

The benefits of switching to a .Bank domain include:

  • Verified authenticity for emails and websites
  • Enhanced data security measures
  • Adaptive compliance and security monitoring
  • Increased customer trust and confidence

To date, .Bank supports a growing community of 866 banks worldwide, with 809 in the United States. For more information on the .Bank domain and how banks can make the switch, visit Register.Bank.
